That distinction goes to Muth, who was unable to run in Kentucky. Here’s a look at the 2024 Preakness Stakes following Monday’s draw, as well as morning line odds for horse racing betting enthusiasts to ponder.

Muth Missed 2024 Kentucky Derby

Muth has been a division leader for most of his career. As a 2-year-old, he was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, America’s most important race for young horses. This year, he’s 2-for-2, and one of those wins came in the Arkansas Derby, which is traditionally a major Kentucky Derby prep race.

However, Muth is trained by Bob Baffert, whose horses have been barred from earning Kentucky Derby qualifying points for the past several years. Muth’s owner, Amr Zedan, attempted to file several injunctions in the weeks before the Run for the Roses to get his horse into the field. However, his injunctions were denied by multiple judges. This left Muth on the sidelines as Mystik Dan won a Derby that broke records for wagering and viewership.

Baffert’s barn will also be represented by another horse in the Preakness, too. Imagination won the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita before finishing second to Stronghold in the Santa Anita Derby. Stronghold proceeded to finish seventh in Kentucky.

Mystik Dan Seeks More Triple Crown Glory

Mystik Dan’s trainer, Ken McPeek, initially did not commit his horse to run in the Preakness. However, he bounced out of the Kentucky Derby well enough for McPeek to ship his charge to Maryland.

He’ll be joined by two other runners from the Kentucky Derby. Catching Freedom, who finished fourth, and Just Steel, who finished 17th, will also wheel back in two weeks for the Preakness. The field also includes Seize the Grey, who won the Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

The Preakness, however, will be without the second and third-place finishers from the Derby. Runner-up Sierra Leone has already shipped back to New York. He figures to be one of the Belmont Stakes betting favorites next month. Third-place finisher Forever Young, meanwhile, has been sent back to Japan. He’ll likely return later this year to contest the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar.
