NFL Wildcard Round Recap

Houston Texans embarrassed the Cleveland Browns:

The Houston Texans, who finished won the AFC South, pulled off a stunning 45-14 upset over the Cleveland Browns. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, the likely Offensive Rookie of the Year, was nearly flawless, throwing for 274 yards. The Texans’ defense also stepped up, limiting the Browns’ prolific offense to just 14 points, and returning two Joe Flacco interceptions back for touchdowns.

Green Bay Packers went on the road and blasted the Cowboys

The Green Bay Packers, led by upcoming star quarterback Jordan Love, outlasted the Dallas Cowboys in a thrilling 48-32 victory. Love threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns while running back Aaron Jones added 118 yards and three scores on the ground.

Did the Eagles quit?

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a statement with a dominant 32-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Tom Brady was awesome, throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns. The Buccaneers picked up 426 yards of total offense, and their defense held the Eagles’ high-powered offense to just 276 yards.

AFC Prediction: Houston Texans vs Baltimore Ravens

Free Pick by Mark Ruelle

Baltimore has emerged as the frontrunner to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl while the Texans have the makings of a team that will challenge for AFC glory for several years to come. A deeper dive into this game reveals two teams that are more evenly matched than the line indicates.

The Ravens and Texans are both 8-4 this season against teams with a winning record. Both quarterbacks have done an excellent job protecting the football through the air this season with a combined 12 interceptions while throwing for 50 touchdowns in nearly 1,000 pass attempts. Jackson is the more dynamic runner of the two while Stroud is the more dynamic passer.

The Ravens have a superior pass defense while the Texans have a superior run defense which could offset each team’s major advantage in this game. The Ravens do have the advantage of experience but they are also just 1-3 in the playoffs with Jackson at the helm. Stroud already has equaled postseason wins after just one game. In truth, I like the Ravens to win this game but it will be tight. In the end, the game will likely come down to a field goal and the Ravens’ major edge with Justin Tucker as kicker could spell the difference. I just don’t feel like this is a two-possession game for the Ravens. Expect the Texans to do what they’ve done all year under Ryans, battle to the end and keep this game tight.

Prediction: Texans +9.5

NFC Prediction: Packers vs 49ers

Free Pick by The Tower

The Packers are playing well, but the 49ers have them beaten in almost every way. When it comes to the offenses, San Francisco has the better weapons and ball movement. San Francisco matches Green Bay’s strong ball security and pass protection.

Defensively, the 49ers are better against the run, better against the pass, and force more turnovers. San Francisco also has better pass rushing. The Packers are good, but facing a better team on the road. Roll with the 49ers to cover the spread as they keep the Packers under 20 points and score at least 30.

Prediction: San Francisco 49ers -9.5
